Designed for pre-polishing and fast cleanup, these aluminum oxide sanding bands are available in seven grits, ranging from 60 to 600, allowing jewelers to progress from more aggressive material removal to finer surface preparation. The high-grade mineral abrasive is paired with a bonding system designed to reduce shelling and extend the usefulness of the bands. Each 1/2-inch-diameter band slips over an expandable rubber drum; tightening the drum screw expands the rubber to hold the band securely in place during use. The bands have a maximum speed of 10,000 rpm, although optimum operating speeds are typically 25 to 50 percent of that maximum depending on the workpiece. Sold in packs of 10, the bands accommodate mandrels with 3/32- or 1/8-inch shanks.
